DUSSEHRA FESTIVAL

Dussehra, also  known as Vijaydashmi is a Hindu festival celebrated across India,as well as in the various parts of Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Srilanka. Dussehra word is basically derived from the sanskrit- Dasha-hara, which means Dashanan's defeat(Ravana's defeat).

Dussehra is the apex of navratris in India and it is celebrated withe great enthusiasm across the country.Navratri is the nine days festival celebrated prior
to Vijaydashmi, its nineth day is also celebrated as Ram Navami. On this day Rama(7th avatar of LordVishnu) killed Ravana who prehended Ramas wife, Sita to his kindom , Lanka. This story of Rama, his younger brother Lakshmana and Sita is recorded in the Hindu epic, Ramayana.

Durga's victory over Mahisasur...

Some of the demigods were powerful and ambitious, one of them was mahisasur, who was more powerful and devastating havoc on the earth. Under his initiative, the asuras crushed the devas. The devas consolidated into Shakti (a mass of brilliant vitality) to slaughter Mahishasura.

An electrical jolt rose up out of the mouths of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, and a youthful, delightful female virgin with ten hands showed up. The divine beings gave her their weapons, and Shakti combine to frame the goddess Durga. On a lion who helped her, Durga battled Mahishasura for nine days and evenings; on the tenth day, Mahishasura was killed. Durga, as Shiva's consort, speaks to two types of female vitality: gentle and defensive, and savage and dangerous.

In North India


Ramlila is the foundation of the festival of Dusshera in northern India, where the scenes from Rama's life are delineated, particularly Bharat Milap, the gathering of Rama with his sibling Bharat, the decimation of Ravana (the highlight of Dussehra) and the arrival of Rama, Lakshmana and Sita to Ayodhya, their kingdom following fourteen years of outcast.
